Professorship in archaeology of non-literate cultures of Europe Universität Zürich

The University of Zurich invites applications for a professorship in archaeology of non-literate cultures of Europe. The position should be filled by 1 August 2027.

Applicants are expected to have an outstanding academic record in teaching and internationally visible research in the field of prehistoric archaeology. A research focus on societies of the Neolithic, Bronze Age or Iron Age periods of European cultural history is part of the job profile. In addition, experience in the field of settlement/landscape archaeology is required, and the development of perspectives for archaeological research into the landscapes of the Alpine region is desirable. Applicants must have expertise in scientific and digital methods, have an interest in contributing to archaeological theory and method development, and have experience in conducting field research projects.

In teaching, the field is to be covered in its entirety. In addition to innovative research impulses for the subject, we expect the successful candidate to attract third-party funding and to collaborate in research and teaching with other professorships at a new department currently in preparation, in which archaeology, classical philology and ancient history will work closely together. The professorship will maintain cooperation with the Faculty of Science, with the Swiss archaeological heritage organization and with national and international institutions.

Candidates must hold a PhD degree and a habilitation or comparable achievements and as well have an excellent record of academic achievements in the relevant field. International networking and relevant experience in interdisciplinary research and teaching contexts are also expected. In addition, didactic skills and experience in leadership are required. The administrative language of the University of Zurich is German, and teaching is conducted in German and English, which is why sufficient knowledge of German is expected within the first three years of employment.

The University of Zurich and Zurich as a location of higher education and research offer a stimulating research and teaching environment with opportunities for professional exchange and cooperation. The University of Zurich is an equal opportunities employer. In order to promote diversity in academic leadership, qualified women and individuals from other underrepresented groups are explicitly encouraged to apply.

The closing date for applications is 1 October 2025. Details on the application procedure are available on www.phil.uzh.ch/jobs.html.
