Essential Job Duties:
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for a Director of Undergraduate Advising. This position is a full time, 12-month appointment.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide academic advice to undergraduate Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology majors.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Undergraduate Programs on student issues.
  • Facilitate coherence, stability, and consistency to the academic programs.
  • Carry an advising load.
  • Provide dedicated leadership for our advising team of faculty advisors.
  • Coordinate with department leadership.
  • Manage the complexity of academic services.

In addition, the Director will:

  • Recruit new majors.
  • Onboard and do orientation for new majors.
  • Handle academic appeals.
  • Serve as department graduation clearance officer.
  • Represent the department on college committees as DUA.

Responsibilities include:

Advising students about completion of sociology, anthropology, and criminology majors.

  • Help students define academic goals and gain an understanding of how to achieve them.
  • Understand and communicate to students the implications of the various program plans and degree progress.
  • Serve as the primary administrative point of contact for students and staff.
  • Understand, interpret, and enforce university, college, and departmental policies while exploring academic and professional options.
  • Help students make transitions and access the full range of university resources.

Leadership and Coordination:

  • Coordinate and support the work of a team of faculty advisors, including providing guidance, training, and performance oversight.
  • Ensure consistent and comprehensive student support.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the advising team and departmental leadership.
  • Collaborate with department leadership on curriculum planning and scheduling.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise Student Ambassadors.

Program Management and Assessment:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the advising and registration process on a continuing basis and put forth recommendations for process improvement.
  • Coordinate departmental recruitment efforts and represent the department at various university and college recruitment events.
  • Keep abreast of relevant course offerings across the College and campus and maintain connections with student service staff across campus.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Train and mentor faculty advisors to ensure consistent advising practices.
  • Handle complex academic appeals and exceptions.
  • Serve as department graduation clearance officer and departmental approval officers for CODA.
  • Represent the department on college committees as the DUA.
  • Participate in new and transfer student orientations throughout the year.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education:

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated skills in judgement, decision-making, problem solving, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to build comprehensive knowledge of University, College, and departmental policies,procedures, and requirements.
  • Strong leadership and organizational management skills suitable for supervising professional staff.
  • Experience with student information systems and academic planning tools.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and instructional software (moodle,zoom, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional advising experience in a university setting.
  • An understanding of sociology, anthropology, and/or criminology as academic disciplines.
  • An understanding of university structure and administration, including the relationship between student affairs units and academic units.
  • Experience working with academic programs, preferably in college student affairs, counseling,or a related field.
  • Experience in leading teams.
  • A record of success in working with undergraduates.
