Entomology Student Assistant-Abney
Position Summary
The Student Assistant will perform a variety of duties involved in the research projects of Dr. Abney’s peanut entomology program. This position will include a mixture of field, laboratory and greenhouse work at multiple locations throughout South Georgia, as detailed in Duties/Responsibilities. Some work takes place out of town (transportation provided), so punctuality is needed. Some workdays will be longer than 8 hours, and the selected candidate will work up to 40 hours per week during the summer term. Students will be limited to 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters per UGA guidelines
Duties/Responsibilities
- Field work-assisting with planting & treatment applications, collecting plant/insect samples, maintaining alleys, harvesting plots
Percentage of time: 30 - Insect colony work-feeding, cleaning cages, collecting adults and eggs, growing corn for insects
Percentage of time: 30 - Laboratory work-evaluating pitfall traps and/or sticky cards for number/species of insects, identifying and counting thrips, evaluating insect damage on peanuts, keeping lab clean
Percentage of time: 30 - Greenhouse work-assist graduate student with care of peanuts in greenhouse

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position
High school diploma preferred
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Ability to take direction and work without constant supervision.
- Ability to work in a group with others or individually.
- Ability to collect data in the field and lab.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and ability to enter data into it.
- Experience operating tractors and various implements is a bonus but not required.
- On the job training will be provided.
Physical Demands
- Work outside in all weather conditions when needed
- Lift at least 50 pounds
- Standing, bending and kneeling in the field.
- Work safely with and around equipment and be pesticide aware.
- Driving to perform job related duties.
