About the opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast‑moving, politically attuned environment and is naturally connected to the public conversation. As Executive Officer, Public Affairs, you will work side‑by‑side with the Executive Director to drive aligned strategy, sharpen decision‑making and strengthen the University’s positioning across the media, government and higher education landscape.

In a role where government and media activity can shift quickly, you will bring clarity, structure and calm, helping ensure priorities are sequenced, risks monitored and the Executive Director is always prepared for what’s ahead. You’ll use your sector insight, political awareness and instinct for emerging issues to anticipate challenges, interpret stakeholder motivations and ensure the right actions are taken at the right time.

Key responsibilities will be to:

  • Deliver high‑level strategic insights based on your understanding of the higher education sector and/or the political landscape and emerging issues
  • Prepare polished, executive‑ready PowerPoint presentations, briefs and materials for senior‑level engagements
  • Coordinate priorities across Media Relations and Government Relations to ensure aligned planning and cohesive delivery
  • Manage inbox priorities, follow‑ups and sensitive correspondence to support the Executive Director’s organisation and focus
  • Synthesise complex information into clear, actionable executive briefings
  • Maintain oversight of key workflows and deadlines, helping create structure and rhythm in a fast‑moving environment

About you

  • Naturally engaged in news, politics and public affairs, with strong instincts around what drives the public conversation
  • Strong understanding of the higher education sector and its government and media context
  • Skilled in preparing high‑quality PowerPoint presentations and executive‑level written materials
  • Highly organised, proactive and able to help senior leaders stay focused, informed and prepared
  • Demonstrates excellent judgement, discretion and confidence when dealing with sensitive or high‑stakes matters
  • Works calmly and collaboratively when priorities shift, bringing order, clarity and professionalism to dynamic work
