Part-Time Peer Tutor, Spring 2026
Part-Time Peer Tutor - up to 3 positions are available
Campus Location: Danvers and/or Lynn
Work Schedule: Varies; approximately 8-12 hours per week.
SALARY: $16.80 per hour, This is a non-benefited position.
At this time, the College is not providing sponsorships for Visas.
Current subject needs include but are not limited to math, writing, accounting, computer science, graphic design & marketing, natural sciences; multiple subjects are preferred.
Peer tutors who complete all required training activities and tutoring hours have the opportunity to earn Certified tutor status, typically possible over 2 semesters of employment.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The mission of North Shore Community College's Tutoring Centers is to support the learning efforts of the students, faculty teaching, and the larger goals within each program of study.
Tutoring is an academic support strategy which seeks to increase the probability of academic success. Peer tutors will conduct individual and, on occasion, small-group tutoring sessions in specified subject areas. Tutors also participate in required training sessions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Meet with students individually or in a small group as appropriate;
- Provide tutorial assistance in specified subject area(s), including study and academic success skills;
- Attend embedded tutoring class (if assigned;)
- Offer referrals to tutoring, Academic Advising, Financial Services, Accessibility Services, and other support services;
- Create Navigate system records of student attendance and learning progress;
- Escalate any concerns about a tutoring student to supervisor;
- Attend required tutor training sessions and staff meetings throughout the semester;
- Assist students in making appointments and logging in/out of center;
- Visit classes to promote tutoring services;
- Tutor students in area(s) of expertise;
- Perform other duties as necessary and as requested by the supervisor.
Job Requirements:
- Recent B+ or higher grade from North Shore Community College in assigned tutoring courses.
- Endorsement of (brief recommendation from) a faculty member for each subject tutored.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Cooperates and works well with both peers and supervisors.
- Able to tutor in more than one subject.
- Demonstrate qualities of patience and empathy; respect for students of all genders, gender identities, cultural/ethnic backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish, French Creole, or other languages,
- Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations.
- Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to work remotely if needed with access to reliable internet for regular video conference activities.
