Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown to an annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 in workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for an Education Support Specialist II position to work in the Student Life department to support recipients of the Educational Foundations Fralin Futures STEM-H Scholarship Program. The purpose of the Fralin Futures Student Success Coach is to provide tailored, enriched learning opportunities and help recipients define, plan, and progress toward their educational goal of graduating in their award year. The position will support a cohort by: 1) organizing career, leadership, and mentorship activities relevant for a STEM-H cohort; 2) providing a central point of contact to assist students and help them navigate available resources at the College. The position also will be responsible for reporting cohort outcomes to the Educational Foundation and assisting in recruitment of STEM-H students.
Special Assignments: May be required to perform other duties as assigned or assist in emergencies declared by the Governor.
KSAs/Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of College activities and student life programs.
- Awareness of STEM-H fields and career paths.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to operate independently with general direction in developing creative programs and activities.
- Knowledge and skills to plan and manage special events and programs.
- Computer skills with knowledge of word processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
- Possess a valid Driver's License.
- Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and non-traditional hours.
- Must work effectively and collaboratively with a wide range of people and organizations.
Additional Considerations
A combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities equivalent to an associate degree. Experience in planning, programming, and implementing student activities or leadership development programs. Experience in an institution of higher education setting working with students.
