Job Duties:

The Residence Hall Director (RHD) is responsible for the welfare and development of students in the assigned residence hall(s). The primary goal is the development of residential communities supportive of personal growth, academic achievement, respect for the rights of others and retention of students. The RHD strives to foster individual and community development by means of individual and group advising, staff supervision and training, appropriate role modeling, performance of administrative functions and participation as a fully functioning member of the professional Residence Life staff team.

This is a live-in position. Residence Hall Directors are required to live in an on-campus apartment within their assigned residence hall. This position requires night and weekend commitments, including Labor Day Weekend for move-in and welcome week activities.

This position includes on-call emergency response responsibilities. RHDs will respond to emergencies in buildings across campus, some of which do not have elevators.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Professional Development-5%

  • Participate in orientation, training and professional development sessions and staff meetings as required.
  • Assist in hall and departmental policy formulation and review.
  • Perform duties on a mission support team (may include leadership, student conduct, training, selection and operations). Other teams created as needed.
  • Serve as a member/chair of an Oshkosh Placement Exchange Committee.

Administration-20%

  • Submit administrative reports and forms within set deadlines
  • Complete conduct cases in a timely and accurate manner and in accordance with university procedures and state/federal mandates (FERPA, Title IX, etc.).
  • Maintain regular conduct and engagement with Residence Life assignment staff regarding general occupancy issues.
  • Maintain regular communication with campus partners such as the Dean of Students office, University Police, Counseling Center and Facilities Management.
  • Assume campus duty coverage on an equal and rotating basis with other senior staff, including holiday coverage.
  • Lead staff in administering surveys and assessment tools in an efficient and timely manner.

Student Leadership Advising-5%

  • Advise and support the Hall Council and its Executive Board
  • Attend weekly Hall Council meetings and executive board meetings.
  • Support and attend events and activities planned and implemented by the Hall Council.

Academic Growth and Achievement and Community Development-50%

  • Through regular contact with students (conduct, personal concerns, etc.), actively engage in discussion about academic success and challenges and direct toward appropriate resources when necessary.
  • Maintain personal contact with residents through daily social interaction, maintenance of office hours and attendance at hall meetings and functions.
  • Support retention and progression efforts through intentional interactions with targeted students and offices.
  • Oversee and support academically-based programs that meet the needs of the residence hall community including development of study groups and peer academic support networks.
  • Develop academic goals with student staff and student leaders.
  • Coordinate comprehensive academic plans for staff and student leaders who are not meeting departmental academic standards.
  • Monitor facilities to ensure they are conducive to academic success (lighting, noise, ample study space, etc.).
  • Serve as a role model, resource person and support agent for students and staff.
  • Facilitate a climate of respect for all students through intentional interactions, formalized programs/educational opportunities and timely response to concerns of bias.
  • Oversee and support hall programs and activities that encourage interaction in the community, based on the Community Living Model.
  • Maintain a secure and functional physical environment.
  • Communicate, clarify and enforce university, departmental and hall policies.
  • Encourage students to assume responsibility for decisions affecting their community.
  • Participate in the management of student behavior problems in the halls by responding to incidents, meetings with students and pursuing appropriate administrative and judicial action.
  • Analyze and use assessment data to improve the student experience in the hall and support their academic success.

Staff Supervision-20%

  • May Supervise an Assistant Residence Hall Director, a graduate Project Assistant position
  • Actively recruit and select Community Advisors and support and assist the recruitment of Desk Managers and Desk Workers.
  • Conduct weekly staff meetings and provide ongoing staff development sessions that serve critical needs for training and promote opportunities for personal and academic growth and development.
  • In conjunction with campus partners, provide oversight and feedback to student positions such as Community Service Officers, Desk Managers and Desk Workers.
  • Oversee the function of the front desk and security station operations in the hall.
  • Co-Supervise duty staff who are assigned to work in the hall.
  • Meet individually on a regular basis with staff to discuss community issues and concerns as well as monitor progress of staff members.
  • Conduct performance evaluations of staff members and other in-hall employees each semester.

Department: Residence Life

Compensation: $43,888

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated supervision skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and experience managing people, including comfort with diverse people and beliefs
  • Previous residence hall experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to the growth, development, and success of all students while fostering a strong sense of belonging and inclusion.
  • Strong communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior problem solving and conflict resolution experience
  • Demonstrated ability in advising student groups
  • Ability to develop and nurture a positive community living environment within residence halls
  • Demonstrated administrative skills
  • Knowledge of facilities and building management
  • Knowledge of judicial/student conduct processes

Education: Master's Degree in Counseling, Higher Education, College Student Personnel or related field
