Departmental Overview

The Lawrence Hall of Science is UC Berkeley's public science center. Our mission is to inspire and engage through science discovery and learning in ways that advance equity and opportunity. The Center for K-12 Science at the Lawrence Hall of Science is dedicated to creating sustainable change in science education systems and fostering inclusive science learning experiences. We focus on addressing the needs of learners and educators in K-12 systems, with a commitment to strengthening science education by designing for the most affected and marginalized students in K-12 science education. We leverage our expertise in equity-driven supports, professional learning, instructional materials development, and forming partnerships and networks to co-develop and find solutions that meet the needs of national, state and district education systems.

The Learning Design Group within the Center for K-12 Science at the Lawrence Hall of Science develops, disseminates, and implements innovative programs promoting deep and equitable science learning for students grades TK-8. Our NGSS-designed high-quality instructional materials reach more than 5 million students nationwide and have received top ratings from EdReports.

Position Summary

The Science Curriculum Developer position within The Learning Design Group involves working as part of a highly collaborative team to design, revise, and support the implementation of high quality instructional materials. This position may be performed remotely anywhere within the United States and fully remote candidates will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes science standards and translates standards into learning goals and unit foundations.
  • Implements design frameworks and pedagogical approaches in the design and development of new science curriculum content, including teacher and student materials.
  • Evaluates and revises existing instructional materials based on student/teacher/administrator feedback and data.
  • Tests activities in classrooms.
  • Professional development/other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Understanding of three-dimensional, phenomenon-driven teaching and learning as specified by the National Research Council's Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards.
  • Ability to manage complex work and achieve specified goals under time and resource constraints.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in diverse groups across a variety of contexts.
  • Thorough and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments; e.g., Google Suite, Miro, Monday.com, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, cloud-based file storage systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in K-5 science education.
  • Classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience developing instructional materials.
  • Working knowledge of Amplify Science curriculum.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Supporting multilingual learners; Designing for or working with historically marginalized populations; Physical science; Earth and space science; Integration of science and literacy.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $63,000.00 - $85,700.00. The full range for this classification is $63,000.00 - $108,400.00.

  • This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
