Job Description
Nevada State University invites applications for the position of Student Success Specialist. The Student Success Specialist will support the Academic Advising Center (AAC), which coordinates academic advising and student success at Nevada State. The Academic Advising Center serves as a resource to students and teaching faculty in all Schools within the University. The AAC assists students in acquiring and maintaining the academic skills necessary to succeed in their college careers. The AAC provides timely, accurate and developmental academic advising. In addition, this position helps current and prospective students with program requirements, policies, and procedures.
The Student Success Specialist responsibilities will focus on helping to retain and graduate students, especially those with academic risk factors. The position will be involved with using an early alert system which will allow for intrusive advising and support for students in academic difficulty. The position will also advise students concerning their life, career and educational goals. The Student Success Specialist will help students with getting back on track, identifying issues and referring to on and off campus resources that may help the student.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Utilize a developmental, coaching approach to academic advising/mentoring.
- Maintain a strong understanding of success coaching concepts - including learning and studying strategies and non-cognitive factors such as mindset and social belonging - and incorporate them to enhance student learning and promote healthy retention and graduation rates.
- Facilitate students' academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans.
- Participate in the advising-related portion of new/transfer student's orientation sessions.
- Provide proactive and intrusive advising for students with academic risk.
- Intervene and advise students referred to the Student Success Specialist by faculty and staff via Nevada State's student success network, a combination of platforms including Starfish and EdSights AI Texting Bot.
- Manage students in crisis or who are experiencing hardship and collaborate with other campus resources on an as-needed basis.
- Advise students placed on academic warning, academic probation, and academic suspension.
- Assist in the assessment of data to identify student success and retention trends.
- Maintain students' academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during each visit.
- Help coordinate, create, and deliver workshops for student populations.
- Provide walk-in advising on assigned days.
- Assess the student's stage of development and promote their growth through the analysis of options and by charting a path towards attainable academic and career goals.
- Act as a liaison to campus departments and give students resources to complete procedures on campus such as (but not limited to): academic petitions, financial aid petitions, registration, withdrawal, major change, and student information updates.
- Maintain all advising data and provide reports to the Director of Academic Advising as required.
- Incorporate evidence based and data driven approaches to student success.
- Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities including participation in NACADA: the Global Community for Academic Advising.
- Office hours are Monday through Friday 8AM to 5PM, but some weekends and evenings may be required. Additionally, staffing at multiple locations may be required including CSN locations within the valley and the North Las Vegas Nevada State University campus as needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- At least one (1) year of experience in higher education.
- Demonstrated commitment to a diverse, nontraditional, first generation student population.
- Effective written and oral communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment while effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in advising, education, counseling or related field.
- At least one (1) year of experience in academic advising, counseling, or related field.
- Experience with developmental advising/academic coaching at the college level.
- Demonstrated commitment to evidence based and data driven approaches to student success.
- Proven experience creating advising tools and methods; Experience developing and conducting workshops.
