Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit: The Office of Research Compliance and Integrity (ORCI) located in the Division of Research and Engagement at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is responsible for the oversight of research integrity and compliance matters in the areas of: ethical conduct of human and animal research, responsible conduct of research, biosafety, federal and state regulations, export control and international travel or collaboration policies, external professional activities, conflicts of interest and commitment, and security.
Position Summary: The Assistant Director provides leadership and oversight for compliance operations within the office. The Assistant Director will be a subject matter expert for research integrity matters, with primary responsibilities for human subjects institutional review board (IRB) and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). They will implement procedure that supports a culture of research compliance and ethics while continuing to ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations and policy. The Assistant Director will regularly engage with faculty and staff on the university campus regarding research compliance activities and work with them to identify areas where education or support is needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree with 3 or more years of relevant experience.
- Applicants must have experience working in a higher education environment.
- Applicants must be able to independently review applications that have human research components and make decisions related to approval or review by the full board.
- Applicants must understand Responsible Conduct of Research and Research Misconduct regulations (the certification).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or Juris Doctorate.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience assessing compliance risks in a university.
- Ability to supervise and mentor others.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively at all levels in a university setting and as a team member.
- Experience reviewing IRB protocols.
- Ability to approach problems and decisions analytically.
- Experience analyzing, writing, implementing, and explaining policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the Cayuse system and other research administration electronic systems.
- Certified IRB Professional (CIP) Certification (or the willingness to pursue the certification).

Key Responsibility: Institutional Research Board (IRB)
Percentage Of Time: 65%
Essential Tasks:
- Manage all IRB submissions and serve as an analyst or reviewer for exempt, expedited and full board IRB protocols to ensure accuracy, ethical congruity, compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations and procedures.
- Advise and assist faculty, staff, and students in the completion of IRB submissions and provide regulatory interpretation of local and federal policies that pertain to IRB submissions.
- Manage the distribution of approval letters and approved documents to university researchers. Review all document templates and update as regulations and policies are changed.
- Review Institutional Authorization (Reliance) Agreements and Individual Investigator Agreements and recommend their approval or denial to the Director.
- Serve as a ClinicalTrials.gov Protocol Registration and Results System (PRS) administrator.
- Promote compliance and adherence to federal regulations through educational outreach. This may include presentations, classroom lectures, or meetings.
- Regularly review and assess IRB policies and procedures to ensure processes are meeting the needs of the university community.
- Serve as leadership for the IRB and provide direct supervision and oversight to the IRB team.
- Responsible for facilitating the selection of the IRB Chair and all IRB board members.
- Provide training for new IRB staff and new IRB board members.
- Schedule and attend full board IRB meetings. Serve as a voting member and act as a resource and regulatory expert for IRB board members.
- Manage the University Federal Wide Assurance and related information.
- Serve as a member of university committees when an ORCI designee is requested.
- Facilitate and manage the post-approval monitoring process to ensure university human subjects research is compliant.
- Serve as first reviewer for IRB non-compliance issues. Work with the IRB Chair and Board to resolve and manage non-compliance instances in accordance with federal regulations and university policy.
- Maintain and update as needed the IRB module in the Cayuse System.
- Perform job functions of all staff under their supervision as needed.
Key Responsibility: Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)
Percentage Of Time: 20%
Essential Tasks:
- Oversee the Responsible Conduct of Research program at the university.
- Develop the appropriate RCR training and workshops, including education and training for faculty, staff, and students.
- Maintain a record keeping system to confirm that RCR requirements are being met per federal regulations.
- Ensure that policies and procedures are up to date.
- Assists the Research Integrity Officer in misconduct proceedings.
Key Responsibility: Reporting and Administration
Percentage Of Time: 10%
Essential Tasks:
- Serve as liaison between UNCG and Federal Offices (OHRP, ORI/HHS, Etc.) as necessary for annual or other reporting.
- Work with other university offices including the Office of Institutional Integrity and General Counsel, Office of Sponsored Programs, UNCG Innovate, and the Office of Contract and Grant Accounting.
- Create and review content for the UNCG Scholar IRB and RCR webpages.
- Coordinates collection and organization of the applicable information for IRB for the ORCI Fiscal Year Annual Report.
- Assists the ORCI director in revising and updating institutional and office policies and procedures.
- Assists the ORCI team in other covered areas (COI, IACUC, IBC, Export Control) as needed.

- Attends regional and national meetings/conferences to bring information to ORCI stakeholders.
- Other duties as assigned.
