The Department of Learning Sciences is an interdisciplinary unit dedicated to improving the human condition through data-driven investigation of the learning process, through the effective design of learning innovations, and through the development of learning science professionals in five distinct areas of specialization: Applied Behavior Analysis, Deaf Studies, Educational Psychology, Learning Technologies, and Special Education.
The Interactive Teaching and Learning Lab utilize a mixed-reality teaching environment that supports the development of teachers’ classroom management and instructional skills. In the lab, pre-service or in-service teachers walk into a room where everything looks like an elementary, middle, or high school classroom. However, unlike a traditional classroom, the lab is a virtual setting and the students in the classroom are avatars.
The Department of Learning Sciences is currently seeking an experienced, qualified, and innovative candidate for the inaugural Director of the Interactive Teaching and Learning Lab in the College of Education at GSU.

WHAT WILL YOU DO:
Duties for this position will include leading research & development initiatives around virtual and mixed reality teacher learning environments including AI driven automation, leading technology supported professional development initiatives for pre- and in service teachers and seeking out and managing external funding to support these efforts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Lead interdisciplinary R&D initiatives that oversee iterative design cycles to develop, test, and evaluate immersive simulations to support teacher learning and reflection while conducting mixed-methods research and disseminating finding.
- Design and lead technology-supported professional development programs for pre-service and in-service teachers and collaborate with faculty and school partners to integrate simulations into existing coursework and professional learning experiences.
- Seek grant opportunities to support the lab’s research, development, and training initiatives and oversee budgetary planning, reporting and compliance.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Ph.D. in Instructional Technology and 6 years of related experience.
Preferred Requirements:
- Knowledge and 6 years or more of experience in some combination of working on externally funded projects, instructional design, learning sciences, education research, virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR) research, design, and development, AI use in educational simulations, and teacher professional development is preferred. Demonstrated experience in most if not all these areas is desired. Experience working with others, interfacing with university and community stakeholders, and on interdisciplinary teams is also highly desired.
