CGU- Director of Operations at The Drucker Institute

The Drucker Institute (DI) at Claremont Graduate University is home to nearly a century of foundational research from Peter F. Drucker, widely recognized as the father of modern management, as well as contributions from other leading management thinkers such as Tom Peters and Charles Handy.

The DI is building a team of individuals who can help manage existing programs such as the Drucker Archives, The Drucker Prize, Doing the Right Things Well Podcast, The Drucker Institute Corporate Rankings, as well as launch new initiatives that will take the Institute and Peter Drucker's legacy into the future. The successful candidate has demonstrated strengths in project management, business development, operations, budgeting, and managing online and hybrid executive management programs.

The position is responsible for program development, client relations, financial analysis and management, supporting faculty, staff and students, and logistical implementation of programs and projects. The position provides administrative support for a wide range of Drucker Institute activities, including but not limited to the Corporate Rankings Advisory Board and Data Innovation Team, the Drucker Institute Archives, The Drucker Prize, The Drucker Podcast and other media projects, the Drucker House and museum program, and executive training and education.

Responsibilities include scheduling, budgeting, documentation, coordination of meetings and events, and ensuring smooth communication and logistical support across these programs.

The Program Director works independently, employing strategic analysis to take actions and make decisions that support The Drucker Institute's long-term goals. The successful candidate reports to the Executive Director of the Drucker Institute.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with Institute leadership, budget office personnel, information technology staff, enrollment service managers, marketing and communications, finance, and other stakeholders to develop and deliver the programs and projects of the Drucker Institute.
  • Professionally represent the Drucker Institute at meetings with corporate, government, and non-profit sponsors, professional groups, and faculty to discuss new and continuing programs.
  • Implement cost effective processes.
  • Assist in developing strategic partnerships with appropriate organizations.
  • Independently and effectively handle problems related to programs, faculty, and other stakeholders and systematize the solution and problem-solving process for future occurrences.

Additional responsibilities:

  • Develop and oversee financial budgets.
  • Analyze costs, make and implement budgetary changes, and manage financial performance for portfolio of programs.
  • Prepare and administer program budgets, with overall profit and loss, revenue and expense responsibility.
  • Implement procedures to increase group and program revenue and net income.
  • Achieve financial targets for all projects and programs.
  • Evaluate the profitability potential of prospective programs and find ways to improve financial performance with effective program budgeting.
  • Ability to attend offsite client programs and client meetings at local, out-of-state, and international locations.
  • Ensure that all project management standards are followed.
  • Establish and work toward achieving key performance indicators for the various phases of the project.
  • Maintain consistent and accurate status information, data, documentation, and audit trail for each project and implement a communication standards protocol.
  • Keep university stakeholders apprised of progress.
  • Identify opportunities and risks and develop contingency plans.
  • Implement a continuous improvement style, incorporating best practices and identifying root causes that are then addressed as problems arise.
  • Establish and adapt strong management of the project through phases, from development and implementation to improvement.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Demonstrated experience in project management within higher education, including planning, execution, and continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability to lead and support online learning programs with a strong understanding of digital pedagogy.
  • Advanced knowledge of learning technologies, including tools used for instructional delivery, content management, and virtual collaboration.
  • Strong budgeting and financial analysis skills, with experience managing program costs and aligning resources to strategic goals.
  • Effective leadership capabilities, including team coordination, stakeholder engagement, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills and professionalism in engaging with diverse internal and external audiences.
  • Self-motivated and resilient, with a demonstrated ability to thrive in team-oriented, high-pressure environments.
  • Adaptable, inclusive, and committed to service excellence in dynamic academic and organizational settings.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

1. EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in business or related field required. Master's degree preferred. Or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability.

2. EXPERIENCE: Three years of experience and demonstrated success related to program management and project management, including two years of supervisory experience.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Education or educational experience with the field of data analytics and evaluation. Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification. Demonstrated ability to work with faculty and student teams. Customer relations. Process design and experience managing multiple priorities. Innovation and change management.

HOURS: The regular hours for this position are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Hours may vary due to needs of the College or department.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of the Drucker Institute with a dotted administrative line to the provost office at CGU.
