The Hendrix-Murphy Foundation enriches and enhances the study of literature and language at Hendrix College, both for the college community as a whole and for the students with an intensive interest in literature and language. The Murphy Scholars Program, Hendrix-Murphy’s signature enterprise, provides a select cohort of students across majors with dedicated funding and mentorship to pursue their literary and language-learning passions. The Assistant Director serves as a student-facing resource for Murphy Scholars and other students interested in literature and language. The Assistant Director mentors the development of quality student cocurricular projects by helping students refine their ideas into feasible projects, recommending additional staff and faculty mentors, and coaching them on proposal writing, budget planning, and submission protocol. The Assistant Director shepherds projects through to the completion stages. The Assistant Director also supports the enrichment and enhancement of literature and language at Hendrix by providing general administrative support to fulfill the Foundation’s mission. A full-time, 12-month appointment, this role reports to the Foundation Director and works closely with the Communication and Events Manager and the Office and Building Manager. The Assistant Director must have enthusiasm for literature and language in the context of liberal arts education, as well as a track record of strong interpersonal skills when interacting with diverse constituencies.
Primary Duties
- Assists with recruiting, selection, and induction of Murphy Scholars as well as organizing all Scholars meetings and gatherings (logistics, rosters, creating slideshows, etc.);
- Serves as a resource for Murphy Scholars about programming and requirements; and tracks each Scholar’s progress through the program;
- Mentors the development of quality student cocurricular projects;
- Maintains records of each Scholar’s study-travel allowance fund and administers the disbursement of Scholar funds;
- Maintains Murphy Scholars Program databases;
- Assists funding recipients in disbursing funds and making travel arrangements;
- Publicizes the availability and scope of Hendrix-Murphy funding to faculty and students;
- Serves as a resource for faculty who are mentoring student proposals and projects; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrated organizational and time management skills, and the ability to work in a dynamic environment and meet deadlines;
- At least 3-5 years of administrative experience;
- Proficiency with office software such as Microsoft Office Suite, Airtable, and Acrobat, or fluency in learning such systems.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Grant-writing or small grants administration;
- Purchasing and payables is desirable.
