Position Highlights

The Tree Ring Laboratory at the University of Arizona invites applications for the position of Conservation Assistant. This position will be based in the conservation lab at the National Park Service's (NPS) Western Archeological and Conservation Center (WACC) in Tucson, AZ. The successful applicant will work with objects in NPS collections, which include archaeological and historic objects from a wide range of contexts. Work includes creating customized storage supports for museum collections, assisting with minor conservation treatments and documentation, packing collections for transport, and assisting with other tasks that contribute towards conservation projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the design and construction of customized storage supports for museum collections. Examples include creating customized handling trays for archaeological ceramic vessels, creating cavity trays for delicate items, and reorganizing collections in boxed storage into tray storage systems to minimize directly stacking items.
  • Carry out or assist with conservation treatment of museum collections as trained and under the supervision of full-performing conservators. Examples of common treatments at WACC include brush vacuuming, cleaning and coating historic metal objects, and reassembling previously treated archaeological ceramic vessels.
  • Provide written treatment proposals generated from FileMaker Pro databases for approval by NPS staff prior to treatment. Documenting treatment work with written treatment reports generated in FileMaker Pro.
  • Digitally photograph objects before and after treatment, edit photographs in Adobe Bridge, and file photos in the established digital filing system.
  • Miscellaneous conservation duties include packing objects for transport between NPS units; training students in creating storage support; basic administration and progress tracking.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of working within a conservation laboratory.
  • Ability to perform conservation techniques.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to the position.
