Job Overview

The Managing Director for Programs and Strategy for the Moores School of Music is responsible for providing strategic, financial, and operational planning and management for the School of Music. This individual serves as the primary program administrator for the Moores Opera Center, Texas Music Festival, and other MSM programs. Liaise with faculty, the Office of Student Success, and the Executive Leadership team to organize student enrollment and class/rehearsal time schedules. In collaboration with the artistic and program directors, this individual collaborates to plan a season that can be executed within available resources and works closely with the Director and other senior leaders to develop and execute program and financial plans that align with the school's goals and objectives.

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Work with MSM leadership to develop and manage the annual budget for the School of Music, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and efficiently.
  2. Provide financial analysis and reporting to the Director and other senior leaders to inform decision-making and ensure financial performance is aligned with the school's goals.
  3. Collaborate with the Director and other senior leaders to develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans for the School of Music.
  4. Create and manage program budgets, in collaboration with the program directors, including the Artistic and Music Directors for the Moores Opera Center, the Texas Music Festival, and MSM summer programs.
  5. Work in partnership with Opera and other program directors on all production decisions to align with available resources and the strategic vision of the programs.
  6. Collaborate with college production personnel and program directors to develop financially viable production plans for each program’s season that align with the artistic vision of the programs and the school’s initiatives.
  7. Track all expenses, including ticket sales in liaison with the box office manager, and report regularly to optimize resources and ensure a successful production season.
  8. Monitor, survey, and inspect various aspects of program operations on a regular, frequent, and continuing basis to ensure high quality conditions and appearances, troubleshoot problems, recognize accomplishments, and report results.
  9. Prepare and collect any contracts and other documents associated with the season and the component productions. Includes initiating contracts for rights and rentals with publishers and managing travel for visiting guest artists.
  10. Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, such as donors, vendors, and other stakeholders to support the financial and business operations of the School of Music.
  11. Facilitate all procurement, human resource, and other financial transactions for the School of Music.
  12. Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and high performance.
  13. Develop and implement policies and procedures related to financial operations that align with best practices and support the strategic goals of the Moores School of Music.
  14. Meet regularly with the Director of the Moores School of Music.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in financial management within a performing arts field, with strong production background and knowledge.
  • Experience working in higher education strongly preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills, with a proven track record of building and managing high-performing teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to think strategically and provide innovative solutions to complex challenges.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and legal requirements related to financial and business operations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and benefits package. The Managing Director for Programs and Strategy for the Moores School of Music is a key member of the School of Music's leadership team and plays a critical role in supporting the School's mission and strategic goals.

MQ: Education: Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Experience: Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of directly job-related experience. Certification/Licensing: None.
