Position Summary

Spelman College seeks a dedicated, talented, and collaborative Technical Director (TD) to supervise the technical theatre/presentation/performance and audience services operations of our new and newly renovated state-of-the-art artistic venues - the blackbox performance space of the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation and the Arts AND the LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Samuel L. Jackson Center for the Performing Arts.

Reporting directly to the Artistic Director the TD will also collaborate regularly with the CI&A Operations Manager, the CI&A Program/Production Coordinator, Spelman Technical Services (STS), and Facility Management Services (FMS). The TD will recruit and manage the production crew and audience services staff, provide input to the Department Chairs within the Division of Arts.

The TD will recruit and manage the production crew and audience services staff, provide input to the Department Chairs within the Division of Arts. The TD will have experience with cinematic/film presentations/screenings, streaming/digital projections, traditional and contemporary theater, performance, dance practices including site specific and live-streaming approaches, and live/digital music presentations/performances. The TD oversees logistics (including site plots, load ins and strikes) for featured artists/guests and performances, screenings and presentations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The TD will manage and coordinate all technical elements for:

  • Lighting, scenic, A/V and sound elements. The TD will also work closely in collaboration with Music and Dance Department Chairs, in support of curriculum related productions. This is a 12-month staff position, with hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in addition to some nights and weekends necessary for rehearsals/performances.
  • Responsibilities include:
  • Overseeing the general maintenance and safe use of the principal venues, assuring the proper maintenance of equipment, maintaining necessary supplies, and facilitating production needs.
  • Consulting on and contributing to the setup and strike of required equipment within the CI&A's programmable spaces.
  • Coordinating and consulting on load-ins and strikes for all CI&A black box theatre and programmable events/activities, assessing and analyzing scenic design drafts and site plots, managing production schedules within budget.
  • Coordinating and/or consulting on program events/activities and sites curated/programmed by the Artistic Director.
  • Coordinating and/or consulting on load-ins and strikes for curriculum related productions for the Music and Dance departments in the Center for the Performing Arts, assessing and analyzing scenic design drafts and site plots, managing production build schedules, contributing to scenic and prop construction and ensuring all scenic elements are completed in a timely manner and within budget.
  • Participating in production meetings for the CI&A and Dance and Music Departments and being present or ensuring adequate crew and volunteers are on site for all productions, activities and events in the principal venues. Implementing and maintaining best and safe practices in the use and maintenance of production equipment and facilities. Directing all aspects of the day-to-day black box technical operations including equipment maintenance in consultation with the Facilities Management Services (FMS), Spelman Special Technology Services (STS) departments and/or the CI&A Operations Manager, vendors, and suppliers
  • Directing troubleshooting activities when technical system problems occur.
  • Direct and manage load-ins and outs for activities in the CI&A's black box theatre.
  • Direct and manage load-ins and load outs which are rehearsal and performance related for the Music and Dance Department in the Baldwin Burroughs Theatre in the Rockefeller Arts Building.
  • Responsible for identifying, consulting with the Artistic Director, and submitting requests for production and production related equipment purchases, maintenance, and usage requests; liaising with Facilities Management and Spelman Technical Services to ensure their usage can be supported.
  • Coordinating with both the Artistic Director and Production/programming Coordinator on the purchase of Title III funded materials and supplies; assist in filing necessary forms related to projects and equipment
  • Coordinating and consulting with the Technical Director of Theatre and Performance in the Baldwin Burroughs Theatre.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree, and/or a minimum of 10+ years of professional experience in technical theater and or production in arts/fine arts or Production or Theatre Production, is required.

  • A proven track record in strategic production planning in the arts, finance management (e.g. budget supervision), project management, and supervision required.
  • A proven track record working with FOH/Audience Services staff. Experience recruiting and/or hiring and/or managing Audience Services is a plus.
  • 10+ years of managing theatre technicians/production crews. Strong management (including recruitment and hiring) and scheduling skills required.
  • Strong technical abilities and a vision for set design, lighting, design, cinematic/film/digital projection/screenings and theatrical production; experience with sound design is a plus.
  • A minimum of 5+ years of professional experience as a Technical Director, and/or Lighting Designer, and/or Production Designer for theatre and performance, film/video screenings, and/or event management and/or work equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Deep knowledge of the history of theatrical design and stagecraft.
  • Passion, patience and expertise required for working with staff, faculty, students, volunteers, artists, guests, internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient working with MS word office suite is required, some working knowledge with CAD is a plus-
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of all aspects of the performing arts with a strong emphasis on contemporary art forms.
  • Excellent knowledge of customer service requirements in a wide range of the performing arts with a good knowledge of industry riders and touring requirements.
  • Excellent leadership, mentorship and supervisory skills with the ability to motivate staff.
  • Excellent strategic planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, client relations, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong business relationships with clients and suppliers.
  • Ability to schedule and manage multiple events concurrently.
  • Ability to work in a creative environment, meet firm deadlines, and be responsive to changing needs.
  • Excellent sense of teamwork.
  • Physical requirements include lifting, balancing, crouching, climbing, and working from great heights.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle office supplies, operate computer and other office equipment, talk, and hear, and assist with set work. The employee is also required to: reach with hands and arms. The employee is also regularly required to: stoop, climb, balance, crouch, work from great heights, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.
