The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Anthropology Division is seeking a full-time Curatorial Associate to lead its collections management program. They are responsible for the care, preservation and accessibility of diverse anthropological objects for research and public engagement. The Associate supervises a team of Museum Specialists to manage the collections under the direction of the curators, including collections storage spaces, facilities, equipment, databases and the informatics program. Additionally, they coordinate with the Cultural Resources Office, the Director of Collections Programs and others to facilitate and supervise visits to the collections for researchers, staff and external visitors. They work with the curators to seek external support for collections improvement, digitization of collections, informatics, and other initiatives.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage and curate the Anthropology Division's collections, including objects on public display, in compliance with the AMNH Trustee Collections Policy.
  • Direct collections management operations, working with curators to develop and meet short- and long-range objectives.
  • Supervise the divisional Museum Specialists, defining roles, assignments and completion of work. Supervise volunteers and their efforts in collections storage.
  • Ensure the collections are documented, accessioned, cataloged and preserved according to institutional standards and practices.
  • Facilitate access to the collections for researchers, staff and external visitors.
  • Ensure compliance with Museum policies, ethical guidelines and legal requirements related to collections management, including repatriation and cultural sensitivity issues.
  • Maintain the collections informatics program, systems/databases and the integrity and security of data.
  • Direct annual collections reporting and other administrative directives.
  • Collaborate with Exhibition and Education to support the development and maintenance of anthropology-related exhibits.
  • Manage incoming/outgoing loan activities, shipping/receiving, permitting, wildlife transaction reporting and compliance.
  • Work with the department administrator, curators and other Museum offices on purchasing and budget management.

The expected salary range for the Curatorial Associate is $93,000/annual - $98,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
