The Director of Housing & Student Activities is responsible for working closely with the Dean of Students on all aspects of the Housing and Student Life operations. This person develops programs and activities designed to engage the student population in housing and across campus as part of a successful student life program for all students at Western. This person is responsible for supervising the housing program, the student activities program, advising the Student Government Association, and working with the Mustang Radio Station and various clubs on campus.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR WHICH THIS INDIVIDUAL IS ACCOUNTABLE
Housing:
- Works closely with the Dean of Students in the administration and daily operations of the Housing functions of the College, including the Housing budgets and facilities.
- Supervises the Housing Coordinators and ensures that they complete all duties listed in their position description.
- Builds the floorplan and makes housing assignments each semester based on deposit date. Communicates these assignments to the Student Life Office Assistant for billing purposes.
- Addresses student problems and issues and works to find appropriate solutions or referrals. Remains knowledgeable of Western's support services and staff for easy referral.
- Works with and coordinates custodial and maintenance staff to ensure that general housing cleaning and maintenance work is completed in a timely manner.
- Coordinates each Housing Check-In Day every semester.
- Tracks off-campus housing rates, as well as housing rates at other colleges in the state and region for comparison and data purposes.
- Respects the confidentiality of student situations and serves as an advocate when needed.
- Coordinates the upkeep and check-out process of the storage bin areas in Housing.
- Coordinates the summer conferencing, cleaning, and maintenance efforts of Housing.
- Manages the Housing email account.
- Under the direction of the Dean of Students, schedules being on-call when needed, and carries out emergency procedures as appropriate.
- Serves as the resource person for student housing information, explaining and applying policies and procedures, determining housing eligibility and availability, and recommending or making specific housing assignments.
- Works with the Student Life Office Assistant to update & maintain current and historical databases and tracking occupancy information for Housing. Generates Housing reports and statistics as needed.
- Contacts external agencies concerning purchasing, rentals, equipment leases, repairs, and other needs or information.
- Updates Housing web pages, Portal pages, Housing Handbook, Housing Lease, Meal Plan Contract, Room Condition Reports, and other necessary forms.
- Coordinates and distributes access cards to students who live in housing.
- Refers housing and meal plan accommodation requests to the Accessibility & Disability Specialist.
- Coordinates the distribution of vehicle parking stickers for housing students and ensures that Campus Security has access to the database.
- Coordinates the collection and maintenance of MMR and Meningitis vaccination records or exemption forms for each housing resident and stays current with applicable health regulations by communicating with the county health department when needed.
- Serves as the Chair of the Housing Retention Team as part of the Student Retention & Completion Plan
Student Activities:
- Oversees a vibrant and active Student Activities program that is appealing and engaging to all demographics and location of students, and based in data informed decision making. Oversees the coordination of campus-wide educational, social, civic engagement, and diversity-related programs to foster the development of students.
- Coordinates and plans Mustang Market, Club/Advisor Recognition, Annual Awards Banquet, and other events to promote student & employee involvement in clubs and other activities on-campus.
- Oversees the design and execution of Welcome Week activities each semester.
- Surveys students on a regular basis to determine the most desired student activities.
- Works closely with the Marketing Department to market all student events via social media.
- Works with the Student Life Office Assistant to post the advertisements that are put on the TV monitors around the campus.
- Oversees a comprehensive intramural program for the entire academic year that appeals to all demographics of students and that are in line with regional and national trends.
- Oversees the campus game room with day, evening, and weekend hours and ensures that equipment in the game room is protected, relevant, and up to date.
- Serves as the Chair of the Student Activities & Engagement Team as part of the Student Retention & Completion Plan
Student Government Association:
- Serves as the primary advisor of SGA, with the Dean of Students and Student Life Office Assistant as support advisors. Attends weekly meetings, as well as other regular officer meetings, and ensures that an advisor also attends all appropriate events.
- Ensures that the efforts of SGA are centered on student government; student engagement; student representation; policy review and input; shared governance; civil and community engagement; and student leadership.
- Works to ensure that clubs have a Western employee advisor and assists in coordinating events and efforts of clubs.
Mustang Radio Station:
- Serves as a co-manager of the college radio station with the Dean of Students. Manages the programming and day-to-day operation of the radio station and serves as the primary advisor of the Mustang Radio Club.
- Ensures that equipment used in the radio station is kept safe and is updated when needed. Provides training to students, employees and community members on how to operate the equipment in the radio station to allow them to host their own shows, as well as how to operate the portable equipment used for dances and other events.
- Ensures that athletic events be broadcast live on the radio station on a regular basis.
- Provides necessary documentation to ensure compliance with FCC regulations.
General:
- Serves as a member of the Behavior Intervention Team (BIT).
- Serves as an advisor of the National Student Leadership Society (NSLS) with the Dean of Students.
- Serves on other College committees and attends meetings as appropriate.
- Keeps abreast of professional development by attending conferences, seminars, and workshops and by reading appropriate professional literature.
- Communicates effectively and persuasively the concept and philosophy of higher education and living/learning communities.
- Helps to integrate the Housing and Student Acitvities operations with the mission of the College.
- Promote and support digital accessibility by ensuring that online content, materials, and technologies are inclusive and usable for individuals of all abilities, in alignment with accessibility standards and the college's commitment to equity.
Minimum Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Abilities, Education and Experience)
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Three (3) - Five (5) years experience in housing and/or student activities in the college setting.
- Experience creating and managing programs that foster a positive, inclusive community environment.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and develop good working relationships with subordinates and other employees.
- Good decision-making, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Able to work with students and others from diverse backgrounds and value systems.
- Enthusiasm and initiative.
- Ability to pass a pre employment criminal background check.
Equivalency Statement
For those candidates who do not exactly meet all minimum qualifications, an equivalent combination of education and experience, which has provided comparable knowledge and abilities, may be accepted.

- Master's Degree.
- Experience using technology and data systems to support facility management, scheduling, and customer service functions.
