PhD on Economics of Science: Competition, Collaboration, and Scientific Discovery
Job Summary
You will study how rising competition in academia shapes idea selection in science and its implications for technological breakthroughs. This role involves working at the intersection of economics of science, innovation, and science and technology studies within the Technology, Innovation & Society (TIS) group at Eindhoven University of Technology. Research focuses on topics like the knowledge economy, economics of innovation, system innovation, and sustainability transitions.
Responsibilities
Conduct research on how competition influences idea pursuit and the potential reduction in openness that may limit disruptive technologies. Work under the supervision of Dr. Emilio Raiteri to link academic incentives to the broader innovation system and inform policies for more open and impactful scientific work.
Qualifications and Requirements
You hold or are close to obtaining a Master’s degree in Economics, Innovation Sciences, Data Sciences, Statistics, or related fields. You have a strong background in empirical research methods, econometrics, and/or data science, with experience in statistical software (e.g., Stata or R) and programming (e.g., Python). Experience with large datasets (e.g., publications, funding, or citation networks) is preferred, along with a strong interest in the economics of science, innovation, and research policy. Excellent English writing and communication skills are required, and you must be ambitious and motivated for high-quality academic research.
What the Employer Offers
A four-year fixed-term contract with full-time employment, including a minimum of 10% and a maximum of 15% per year spent on teaching tasks. Salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 per month, based on the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P. Additional benefits include a year-end bonus of 8.3%, annual vacation pay of 8%, high-quality training programs, technical infrastructure, on-campus facilities, commuting allowances, and support for international candidates such as the 30% tax facility.
