PhD student in Machine Learning
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to conduct research in machine learning and fairness applications within the DESTRESS project at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The role focuses on developing machine learning models for stress detection that are robust, reliable, and fair, addressing challenges like limited and noisy data in diverse populations.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research on fairness and ethical AI in stress detection and behavioral data, and publish in top machine learning conferences.
- Participate in the Quantitative Data Analytics (QDA) group.
- Contribute to the DESTRESS project by interacting with partners and stakeholders.
- Contribute to publications and presentations at international conferences.
- Contribute to teaching activities and possibly supervise Bachelor and Master students (up to 20% of the time).
Qualifications and Requirements
- A Master’s degree in artificial intelligence or a relevant area to machine learning.
- Strong record of computer programming, with experience in PyTorch and/or TensorFlow.
- Strong interest or experience in fairness, ethics, and socially responsible AI; publications in the area are highly valued.
- Prior experience in machine learning, ideally in health domain applications and/or time-series/wearables data; publications are valued.
- Experience with human-related or behavioral data is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team.
- Excellent command of English (spoken and written).
What the Employer Offers
A fixed-term contract of 18 months, potentially extending to 4 years. Salary ranges from €2,901 to €3,707 gross per month for full-time employment. Additional benefits include holiday leave, holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, and contributions to commuting expenses. The position is at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Faculty of Science.
