PhD Position in Philosophy
Job Summary: This PhD position is embedded in the NWO-funded project TEND, which investigates the impact of disruptive technologies like the Internet and AI on individuals and societies from an ecological perspective. The role involves developing a foundational framework and conducting case studies on the disruption of epistemic spaces (comparing the printing press and the Internet) and AI chatbots (focusing on communication and authorship). The position starts around 1 February 2026.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on the project’s topic, resulting in a PhD dissertation, journal publications, and conference presentations.
- Participate in the regular research activities of the project, such as weekly seminars, workshops, and conferences; and teaching.
- Participate in the research (and possibly teaching) activities of the Philosophy Department.
- Complete the required PhD coursework for the Humanities Graduate School.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- A Master’s or Research Master’s degree in philosophy or related field (such as science and technology studies, political theory, or media studies), fully completed before the application deadline on October 10th.
- Relevant areas of expertise include social epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of technology, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and political philosophy; candidates should have interests in a combination of these areas.
- Strong academic record and demonstrable affinity with societal and technological contemporary debates.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
What the Employer Offers:
- A fixed-term contract of 1 year, extendable to a total of 4 years upon sufficient perspective.
- A salary ranging from €3059 to €3881 gross per month for full-time employment.
