PhD Position: Theoretical Particle Physics
Job Summary: As a PhD candidate, you will conduct fundamental research in theoretical particle physics, focusing on dark matter and its signatures at particle colliders. This position is supervised by Dr. Susanne Westhoff at Radboud University and involves collaboration with Dr. Flavia de Almeida Dias at the University of Amsterdam. It is part of the project 'Reconstructing 25% of the Universe with New LHC Triggers', funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), aiming to develop theory predictions and new searches for dark matter bound states in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The appointment is for four years, starting in January 2026 or soon thereafter, and includes duties as a teaching assistant for about 10% of your time.
Responsibilities: Conduct research in theoretical particle physics with connections to experimental observations; develop theory predictions and new searches for dark matter; collaborate with researchers; and participate in international conferences and visits.
Qualifications and Requirements: Hold a Master's degree in physics with a clear emphasis in theoretical particle physics, such as courses in quantum field theory and the Standard Model; be curious, communicative, critical, enthusiastic, proactive, and excited about new developments; work effectively in a team and independently; and possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills in English. The degree should be obtained by the starting date.
What the Employer Offers: A temporary employment contract of 1.5 years, extendable to four years based on performance evaluation; starting salary of €3,059 gross per month based on a 38-hour week, increasing to €3,881 in the fourth year; 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus; Dual Career Coaching; flexible working hours; extra leave days (30 or 41 annually); opportunities for training and development; and a good pension plan.
