General Information:

The Curricular Work-Based Learning Experiences (WBLEs) specialist has two primary functions, that of (1) developing resources and support for faculty to create additional WBLE curricular offerings and (2) creating and maintaining an information clearinghouse on existing curricular WBLE completion. The specialist will develop academic connections across JMU and a system to collect information about curricular WBLE completion.

Duties and Responsibilities:

#1: Faculty Curricular Engagement and Support (35%)

  • Support faculty and students in aligning classwork with hands-on skills needed for a profession or career path and National Association for College and Employers (NACE) competencies, often through supporting collaboration with external partners in business and community organizations.
  • Use an assessment rubric and consult with pedagogical experts to ensure curricular work-based learning experience (WBLEs) offerings adhere to JMU agreed standards.
  • Offer one-on-one coaching to faculty in the development of WBLEs assignments and courses.
  • Lead a cohort of Faculty Fellows as they develop or enhance their WBLE courses.
  • Survey faculty and students about WBLE quality and additional resources needed to enhance them.
  • Serve on the Faculty WBLE Engagement Advisory Group to collaborate with faculty on how to enhance quantity and quality of WBLE offerings.
  • Make recommendations for interventions to enhance WBLEs across the university.

#2: Assessment and Data Tracking for WBLE Courses (30%)

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in the UCC and in Academic Affairs to collect and report data on for-credit WBLEs.
  • Verify alignment between courses and JMU criteria for WBLE when instructors or teaching methods change.
  • Communicate with academic unit heads, faculty and the registrar's office to determine whether tags should be at the section or catalog level.
  • Create reports and other content for WBLE reporting including total WBLE courses and student enrollment in these courses.
  • Report data to constituencies, including State Council for Higher Education in Virginia upon request.
  • Make recommendations of resources and services needed to increase the number and quality of WBLE opportunities that students may take for credit.

#3: Support WBLE Research (20%)

  • Develop a repository of resources for faculty who teach work-based learning and community-engaged courses.
  • Support the production of new research and scholarship related to work-based learning, community engagement, and hands-on applications of classroom learning.
  • Present at conferences and submit articles to research journals to document findings on work-based learning.
  • Encourage WBLE faculty to submit their relevant research and writing to journals related to work-based and experiential learning, high-impact teaching practices, and innovation.
  • Provide content about curricular WBLEs for informational and promotional channels including newsletters, webpages, and other marketing materials

#4: University Career Center Support (15%)

  • Contribute to the overall strategy and operations of the WBLE unit within the University Career Center.
  • Coordinate logistics for efforts to support faculty in developing and maintaining WBLE offerings such as developing programs, workshops, materials, and operationalizing grants.
  • Support the general work of the UCC unit at events, fairs, and classroom presentations.
  • Deliver educational programming for current students, faculty and employers.
  • Instruct a section of UNST 480 (Internship Preparation, Participation & Professionalism).

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Masters degree
  • Prior experience with work-based and/or community-engaged learning (service learning), experiential learning, or similar application of learning to a real-world context
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver high-quality instructional resources to constituencies.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary ways or as part of a cross functional team.
  • Demonstrated experience in communicating clearly and professionally in verbal and written forms (such as presentations, reports, instructional materials)
  • Experience mastering software packages similar to: Qualtrics, Microsoft Office packages, especially Excel, Teams, Handshake, and other software and platforms as needed.
  • Must be able to develop strong rapport with multiple constituencies
  • Attention to detail

Preferred:

  • Prior experience teaching at the college level or in public settings using work-based, community-engaged, or experiential learning
  • Prior experience with teaching and/or course development and/or public educational programming and/or experience in instructional design
  • Familiarity with NACE competencies
  • Experience using advanced Excel functions and editing and analyzing complex spreadsheets with thousands of records
