Job Summary
The Nursing Retention & NCLEX Success Coach is a full-time 10-month staff position in Department of Nursing. The Nursing Retention & NCLEX Success Coach is responsible for recruiting and assisting nursing students enrolled in the major courses in achieving and maintaining a high academic performance in the Department of Nursing. The Coach supports students in passing the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses on the first attempt. The Coach engages in early identification, intervention, and remediation for students who require nursing specific academic support and clinical skill development. The Coach mentors and guides students, tutors in nursing specific content, and identifies structured resources.
Responsibilities
Retention (70%) -
- Meets with at risk students to conduct gap analysis for the purpose of creating a success plan, monitoring student progress, and documenting coaching activities and progress.
- Collaborates with Academic Support Services and Counseling services on testing, dealing with anxiety and the development and oversight of remediation activities.
- Designs and implements the re-entry experience for returning students to include a mandatory face-to-face orientation session upon initial re-entry.
- Conducts literature reviews on nursing student success and program completion initiatives as evidence for best practice.
- Develops and maintains mentoring program for at risk students in collaboration with Program Coordinators and Department Chair.
Monitoring (20%) -
- On-going monitoring of nursing standardized exam scores to identify at-risk students and identify resources needed to individualize remediation goals.
- Integrates NCSBN data and analysis as conducted by concept/content and other groups into student support activities.
- Early identification of at-risk students and oversight of strategies to promote student success with NCLEX on the first attempt.
- Monitors and follows students NCLEX readiness post-graduation for 3 months.
- Monitors at risk student performance weekly and maintains regular communication with at risk students as well as their faculty member(s).
- Tracks retention data for pre-licensure students and conducts exit interviews with withdrawing and non-progressing students to determine reasons for withdrawal.
- Continually evaluates process outcomes and makes recommendations for changes accordingly.
Other Duties (10%) -
- Represents MGA to targeted constituencies (e.g. high school students) to promote outreach activities and as required to assist other recruiters.
- Provides orientation and ongoing support for other nursing faculty in the use of student success tools and strategies in the classroom, clinical and laboratory setting.
- Collaborates with faculty on research projects that entail student success, program completion and/or similar subject areas.
- Performs other administrative duties as assigned in support of the Department of Nursing.
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Master's degree in Nursing
Other Required Qualifications
Currently active unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Georgia.
Required Experience
At least three years of clinical practice as a registered nurse
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience
Experience with teaching, mentoring, advising, career counseling, and/or providing student services in a higher education setting.
Experience in providing academic support to students and developing mentor programs.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of the student policies and procedures and those related to the assigned department.
Knowledge of coaching, instructional and mentoring techniques.
Ability to work with population of students, lead groups, act independently, take initiative and promote innovation.
Ability to problem-solve to resolve issues, multi-task and manage stressful work demands effectively.
Must have the ability to perform detail-oriented work by developing and maintaining accurate reports and records.
Excellent skills in communication (written, oral, and interpersonal), collaboration, learning strategies, planning and time management, problem analysis, and resolution.
