Job Duties:
The School of Education (SOE), in collaboration with the ASL-English Interpreting Program (AEIP), seeks a highly qualified ASL-English Interpreter who will also teach in the interpreting program. This dual-role position combines direct interpreting services with instructional responsibilities and student mentorship. The ideal candidate will bring strong professional interpreting experience and a commitment to interpreter education, collaboration, and accessibility in higher education.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Interpreting Duties 75%:
- Provide high-quality ASL-English interpreting services to facilitate communication between Deaf faculty/staff and hearing colleagues, students, and UWM leadership.
- Interpret in a wide range of settings, including but not limited to: department, committee and administrative leadership meetings; student advising and instructional meetings; faculty-student interactions; lectures and presentations by Deaf faculty; guest speakers and community engagement events.
- Translate and/or caption video content originally produced in ASL for use in academic, professional development, or outreach settings.
- Coordinate scheduling and coverage of interpreting assignments in collaboration with UWM leadership and AEIP faculty.
- Provide supervision and support for part-time Limited Term Employees (LTEs) with appointments through the SOE who are engaged in interpreting assignments.
- Occasional evening and weekend interpreting assignments should be expected based on faculty, programmatic, or event needs.
- Provide "first contact" support services for students and families who are interested in both ASL Studies and AEIP for a strong introduction and recruitment for both programs.
- Mentor interpreting students and support their growth through modeling, feedback, and guidance in classroom and practicum settings.
- Instructional and Interpreting Program Support Duties 25%:
- Teach an assigned course within the ASL-English Interpreting Program (AEIP), depending on area of expertise and program need.
- Collaborate in curriculum development, instructional planning, assessment, and reflective program improvement efforts.
- Participate in department meetings, program-wide initiatives, and professional development activities that advance the mission of AEIP and the School of Education.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed.
- Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline.
- Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline.
- May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs.
- Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements.
- Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties.
- Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs.
- Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere.
- Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading.

Compensation:
The target hiring range is $50,000-$60,000 per year (academic basis). Final salary offer is contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities as demonstrated throughout the selection process.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in interpreting, Deaf studies, education, or a related field.
- Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) Sign Language Interpreter Intermediate License.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five (5) or more years of interpreting experience in diverse settings.
- Master's degree in interpreting, Deaf education, linguistics, adult education, or related field, or current enrollment in a relevant master's program.
- DSPS Advanced License or working towards Advance License.
- Experience interpreting in postsecondary educational environments.
- Prior teaching or mentorship experience in interpreter education programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (to be evaluated in interviews):
- Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
- Above average ASL to English (voicing) skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in dynamic academic environments.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting access, belonging, and opportunity in education, and accessible education.
- Familiarity with current trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in ASL-English interpreting and interpreter education.
- Technological fluency, including remote interpreting platforms, captioning tools, and learning management systems.
- Maintain professional standards of conduct, confidentiality, and ethical decision-making aligned with the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
