Duties & Responsibilities: VCU's Military Student Services team is actively searching for a new Assistant Director. The Assistant Director of Military Student Services (MSS) oversees the day-to-day operations of the office including processing of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits, overseeing Federal/State compliance requirements as well as hiring, training, and supervision of new full-time, part-time, and student employees. Using effective communication and outreach, this position will partner with the Director to build a community of support and success guiding students from academic program acceptance through to graduation.
Core Responsibilities:
- Oversee all GI Bill processing through the “Request for Certification” (RFC) and Enrollment Manager (55%):
- Supervise all full-time and part-time School Certifying Officials to maintain quality processing of all VA educational benefits.
- Oversee federal and state compliance requirements as well as MOU requirements for all benefits
- Comply with and support all VA audits
- Update and retain all student records as required
- Be key liaison between MSS and VCU Student Accounting Office overseeing residency waivers as well as Third Party Billing process
- Student Employee Supervision (10%):
- Recruit, train, and provide direct supervision for 8-10 seasonal VA work study employees
- Provide training as necessary for work study students and assign Banner and VA access as needed
- Build a weekly schedule to provide student support as needed.
- Maintain work study site approval with the VA
- Staff front desk and respond to questions and provide student support as required (15%):
- Review MSS emails daily and reply as required.
- Answer phone calls and assist students and families with walk in questions.
- Ensure promotional literature and handouts are updated with current information
- Support New Student and Transfer Orientations, Green Zone and admissions operations as needed (10%):
- Update briefings, MSS website, and online trainings to maintain current status
- Attend university events as needed
- Prepare and update handouts to assist new students and families with benefits applications and processes
- Assist with additional duties as required (10%):
- Support Student Veterans Association events as needed
- Remain current and attend training as required for processing of student benefits in accordance with all VA and VCU systems.
- Support other VCU offices as needed
- Share information on new requirements for all benefits
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Professional experience managing/processing VA educational benefits
- Knowledge of VCU student management systems (Banner, Navigate, similar CRM focused software)
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Direct experience processing VA Education benefits and working with the VA, DOD, DVS or other Veteran support agencies
- Understanding and experience with a large university’s financial aid, admissions and student support systems
- Understanding of state residency requirements and military related exemptions
Other Position Details:
This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangements.
